The Masai Mara National Reserve is found in Narok, Kenya.  It is a fence-less park adjoined to the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania to the South, Siria escarpments to the West and pastoral villages of a community called the Masai to the North and East.  It was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1961.  The reserve is marked by trees and shrubs, and extended grass fields with seasonal rivers.  Annual temperatures range between 20-30 degrees.

elephantThe Mara is famous for its population of African leopards, cheetahs, gazelles, and zebras.  Rivers Mara and Talek are home to hippopotamuses and crocodiles.

The grasslands are home to the Big 5:

The resort also has wildebeest whose population is in the millions.  The Great Migration, which is among the world’s most spectacular occurrences, takes place in The Masai Mara between July and October.  The migration involves annual migration of wildebeest to and from Serengeti in search of pasture.

Masai Mara offers a range of accommodation choices for its guests.  The Mara Triangle (the area to the North-Western end of the Mara) has two camps, Mara Serena and Little Governor’s Camp.  There are other camps on the periphery of the triangle with room to accommodate thousands of guests.  It is, however, advisable to camp in the triangle as it is less crowded and there are many animals grazing on that side of the River Mara.  There are camps (tented) and lodges ideal for couples, families and other groupings.

A range of activities is offered in the Masai Mara.  Game viewing is usually the main purpose of choosing Masai Mara as a luxurious destination.  It is mostly done in an open safari car.  It can also be done from the comfort of your camp depending on its position in the reserve.  Camping by the river to enjoy a picnic.  You can walk through some parts of the park with the help of a tour guide.  This helps you to see small members of the Mara and to have a closer look at the trees.  Having bush dinners and breakfast unites you with nature.  Ballooning is among the most spectacular activities as you have a bird’s view of the animals.  Night game drives are offered to show the guests the behavior of the animals at night and to site nocturnal creatures.  You can also visit the villages of the Masai who have an interesting distinctive culture.  They entertain guests by dancing and singing traditional songs.  They also weave necklaces and curve sculptures which serve as a souvenir of the trip or a gift.
